Musicians Take the Stage on London's Green Bin Program

As of January 15, The City of London has officially launched it's Green Bin Program!

As a member of the UNESCO City of Music network, The City of London puts a lens of music on projects and policies. Being a UNESCO Creative Cities means London is actively working towards the UN's 2030 Sustainable Agenda and supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in everything that we do. SDG #13 Climate Action is focused on taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. As a UNESCO City of Music London is working on many of the SDGs through a lens of music.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was launched during a UN Summit in New York (2015). The UN's 2030 Agenda envisages “a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity, the rule of law, justice, equality and non-discrimination”. There are seventeen (17) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with specific targets and goals for cities to work towards in 2030.

The Green Bin Program supports several of the seventeen (17) SDGs including:

  • SDG #5 – Gender Equality – by ensuring employment and equality for all genders working within the Green Bin Program.
  • SDG #6 – Clean Water and Sanitation – by reducing food waste and landfill sprawl
  • SDG #8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth – by ensuring fair compensation for those involved with the project including the artist advocates.
  • SDG #10 – Reduced Inequalities – by including a wide variety of community members, cultures, and genres of music in the Green Bin Program.
  • SDG #11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities – by introducing a climate-friendly solution, a cost-saving program that reduces landfill sprawl.
  • #SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production – by encouraging and creating a platform for responsible food waste.
  • #SDG 14 – Life Below Water and SDG #15 – Life on Land - are both supported by reducing greenhouse gases, reducing the landfill sprawl and increasing composting citywide.

The SDGs are why the London Music Office is working alongside other City of London Service Areas to help build awareness about the new program and how to properly participate in the Green Bin Program. London artist advocates take centre stage in a series of promotional videos that help the public better understand the program.
